A Harry Potter Reread: The Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Mirror of Erised

In chapter twelve of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, we’re all forced to imagine Hogwarts covered in snow and decorated for the holidays, making it sound even more spectacular and even more depressing that we can’t attend.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

The Weasley twins bounce snowballs off of Quirrelldemort’s head/face which is one of the most accidental badass things that happen in the entire Harry Potter series.

Harry’s staying at Hogwarts for Christmas with the Weasleys, and although D-Malfs of course uses this opportunity to mock an orphan for having murdered parents Harry, and I, think it sounds awesome to stay in a magical castle practically alone for a holiday. Think of all the illegal exploring!

Snape shows up a bit just to get some casual assholery in and our trio is trying to figure out who Nicholas Flamel is and for once Hagrid isn’t doing this:

Madam Pince makes her first appearance and non terrible librarians everywhere bewail yet another stereotype about a hag looming over books with a demented glint in their eyes as they shush you (we aren’t all like this! we sweeeeeaaaaar!)

The Dursleys aren’t even here and we’re still reminded how they are terrible Morlock people

when Harry is surprised to receive presents on Christmas like a normal child does, and considers 50 pence a friendly gift. Hagrid gifts Harry a homemade present, and I shake a pom pom while waving my Hagrid is the Greatest, His Love for Harry is So Pure t-shirt in what I thought was a one-woman but celebration but hey, there are at least FOUR of us!

Hagrid Fanclub: Still Recruiting

Harry gets his first infamous Weasley sweater and the best gift ever in the history of gifts: his dad’s invisibility cloak.

Can we take a minute to discuss how Christmas at Hogwarts sounds like paradise? Ridiculous feast, crackers filled with awesome presents, your professors getting openly drunk, Fred and George cracking jokes…

Harry endears himself to me forever when he decides the first thing he’s going to do with his cloak is sneak into the library to do research.

Bibliophiles everywhere drool with envy as Harry opens up a lot of completely amazingly weird and unique books in the restricted section until Filch almost catches him, then he runs off and finds the Mirror of Erised. We find out the Mirror shows us our deepest desires and its some extremely sad times that Harry sees his family he’s never known, and Ron sees people finally paying attention to him and his achievements. Harry understandably becomes a little obsessed with looking in the mirror since the Garbage Dursleys

haven’t ever talked about or shown him his own parents, and Dumbledore shows up to intervene and spout one of his best pieces of wisdom

and then reverts to eccentric Dumbledore

when Harry asks a rather personal question. All of this begs the questions…what is Dumbledore doing, giving a first year an invisibility cloak telling him to use it well, and then making himself invisible to follow him around?
