Chapter Twelve: Silver and Opals
In chapter twelve of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Harry is experimenting with unknown spells, I discuss how many pure-bloods there really are, and Katie gets cursed.
(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)
Harry should be making Hermione proud by cuddling a textbook in bed like it’s his favorite teddy but since Hermione hates his potions book with every fiber of her being and Harry’s trying out random spells without knowing what they are doing and— HARRY WHAT THE FUCK?! OK, now I’m on Hermione’s side. Harry’s just like lol I made Crabbe’s toenails grow tee-hee oopsie I hung Ron by his ankle like my dad did that time bullying Snape whoopsie doodle! Hermione’s being a pill about the potion tips, but here she is one billion percent right and Harry needs to be more careful…which he will find out later.
The trio get on a talk about Death Eaters and pure-bloods and I guess now is a good time to discuss…what exactly constitutes a pure-blood at this point? Because according to the Sacred Twenty-Eight there really aren’t a lot of truly pure-blood families left. Certainly not enough to sustain all the pure-blood bigotry. So are most of the Slytherins considered half-bloods? Or are they considered pure-bloods but not part of these Sacred Twenty-Eight? Like, for instance, if your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are all wizards/witches are you considered pure-blood but not pure-blood enough for the Twenty-Eight?
In Hogsmeade, our crew runs into Mundungus, who’s prancing around with Sirius’s stolen goblets falling out of his clothes like a moron, and then Katie Bell is touched by a cursed necklace and it’s freaky as hell in the movie.
Harry’s all “btw McG it was Malfoy, I have no proof but it was him” and fine this is the one time he’s being a bit extra about it when he finds out Malfoy was in detention and yet insists it was Malfoy anyway. Even I can’t blame WeazGrang for pulling a Mariah Carey to McG about Harry right now.

Are there really only twenty some odd pure-blood families left? If so, are the rest of the Slytherins and Death Eaters half-bloods?
What is the point of Mundungus in the narrative?
Why does Harry still accuse Malfoy after he finds out he was in detention?
