How to Create Harry Potter Bookshelf Displays

Not only do I love reading the Harry Potter books, watching the movies, visiting the parks, and creating crafts, but I’m a huge collector of Harry Potter merchandise! Through the years I’ve developed some tips on how to display my collection on my (IKEA) bookshelves that you can modify and adapt to your own book and fandom displays.

Most people I’ve noticed display their collection by placing items in front of rows of books like this:

I absolutely love this aesthetic, I think it’s stunning, but it didn’t work for my collection because I have wand sets and other large items that don’t display well this way. (I created another way to display my wands if you’re interested in that craft.) My biggest problem was creating “depth” in my shelves so I could showcase items at different heights to really fill up the display. I’ll show you some ways I created this depth.

First, I bought some wood blocks from amazon. You can find wooden blocks at a craft store or a recycled center, or maybe you just have some kicking around. I painted mine with white acrylic paint so as to better blend into my shelves, but you can paint them any color, add fabric or glitter, or leave as is, it’s up to you, your shelves, and your vision.

Here’s the size of said blocks next to a normal sized funko pop.

I also bought some smaller wooden blocks in square shapes and painted them white as well.

Next, use any other materials you have handy for more faux blocks. I used white felt and wrapped it around wand boxes that I purchased from the wizarding world of Harry Potter. I cut out the felt and taped it around the boxes.

I also used empty funko boxes with this same strategy. I wrapped white felt around the boxes and taped it like a present.

I then dismantled my shelves and prepared to redo them with my new blocks and felt wrapped items.

Here is the end result! Let’s take a closer look.

On the very top I’ve placed a book I created with my spooky book tutorial. The top shelf I used my felt wrapped wand boxes as funko pop stands.

You can see I’ve placed some wand boxes flat, and some on their side for more “rise.”

The shelf below I used the felt wrapped empty funko boxes in the back to display the potion bottles I created.

You can see the Pygmy Puff on a felt wrapped funko box. Dumbledore is “standing” on a stack of white blocks I’ve painted.

Here’s a look at the shelves below the “Half-Blood Prince” shelf.

Looking closer at my “Deathly Hallows” shelf you can see Hermione’s beaded bag atop a felt wrapped funko box.

Voldemort and Harry are on top of two painted blocks.

Here are my books 1-3 shelves.

I placed the “Prisoner of Azkaban” book on a block, and in turn placed Remus on the book.

The funkos on the “Chamber of Secrets” shelf are on painted wood blocks.

The back row on the “Sorcerer’s Stone” shelf is felt wrapped funko boxes, the front row painted wooden blocks.

Dumbledore is on his own wooden block.

Here is “The Order of the Phoenix” shelf, my Honedukes shelf, and the “Fantastic Beasts/Misc” shelf.

Bellatrix and Lucius are atop a felt wrapped funko box.

The Honeydukes items in the back are on top of a felt wrapped wand box.

The possibilities are endless, and now I can rearrange my shelves to my hearts content while still being able to display everything I’d like!
