Do you want to make a Harry Potter button but don’t have a swanky button maker? Never fear, I’m here with a cheap and easy craft you can do for yourself, or at a Harry Potter party! I’ve made these before at Teen Advisory Groups and Harry Potter parties at the library I worked in, but you can also make them as a teacher in your classroom, a parent with your kids, or just for you!
To begin with, gather your materials. You will need:
- Bottlecaps
- Bottlecap sized Harry Potter images (I found mine by searching online and through Pinterest)
- Mod Podge of your choice (I used matte, glossy, and dimensional magic to demonstrate for you.)
- Safety pins
- Hot glue or permanent glue
- Paper and color printer
- Scissors
- Paint Brush (optional)
First, pick out your images. I used images others had created, made sure they were the right size, and printed them out.
Second, paint over any images on the back of your bottlecap if necessary.
Next, select which type of Mod Podge you would like to use for your pins. I will demonstrate below the matte, glossy, and dimensional magic so you can see the differences and choose accordingly.
Cut out your images and add to your bottlecap with a tiny dollop of mod podge on the bottlecap.
Matte Mod Podge (the process is the same for glossy Mod Podge)
Place the image on top of the mod podge.
Add a thick layer of matte, glossy, or dimensional mod podge on top to seal it into place.
Cover it fully and then let dry for a few hours.
Here is how they turned out! Matte Mod Podge:
A direct comparison: Harry potter in Matte, Hogwarts in Dimensional, Deathly Hallows in glossy.
It’s hard to tell in photos but I feel the dimensional magic turned out best, although it’s all down to your preference.
Finally, hot glue or use permanent glue to affix your safety pin to the bottlecap.
Let dry and enjoy!
