A Harry Potter Reread: The Sorcerer’s/Philosopher’s Stone Chapter 14

Chapter 14: Norbert the Norweigan Ridgeback

In chapter fourteen of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hagrid puts our trio in danger for the first time, Malfoy’s a sneaky snitch, and Hermione freaks out about exams.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

We start our chapter with Quirrelldemort resisting Snape’s advances, Hermione losing her mind over their exams being in ten weeks, and Hagrid being typically weird about a secret and hiding it badly. He manages to hold off on blurting out he’s got a dragon’s egg, but acts bizarrely enough that our trio follows him and find out the truth anyway. It takes about two seconds of Hermione flattering Hagrid about Dumbledore  trusting him with the protection of the stone before Hagrid’s back to form and doing this:

So Hagrid’s got an illegal dragon egg hidden inside his wooden hut, our trio knows who is helping guard the stone, and Malfoy is lurking about like the sketchy little sneak he is.

Things are made worse when Norbert hatches and Hagrid pulls a Targareyen

But Harry comes up with a good plan for once and suggests contacting the most elusive of all Weasleys: the Charlie one. (So elusive, never seen in theaters!) Charlie and his friends agree to illegally smuggle a baby dragon out of the country no questions asked on behalf of three tweens.

Everything’s going too well, when Malfoy, (who is trying to get Hermione and Harry in trouble) is caught instead out of bed by McGonagall, and Norbert is safely away with Charlie’s friends

so of course PotzGrange make a fatal rookie mistake and leave the invisibility cloak behind…and are caught by Filch.

Why do Charlie and his friends agree to this illegal dragon smuggling?

Do you think the trio are being good friends or foolhardy for helping Hagrid?

Do you want your own dragon?
