A Harry Potter Reread: The Order of the Phoenix Chapter 20

Chapter Twenty: Hagrid’s Tale

In chapter twenty of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix  Harry, Hagrid almost gets killed by some giants, and I long for someone, anyone, to punch Umbridge in her face.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

So I talked before a bit about how my brother in law and I have argued many times over how wordy Order of the Phoenix is. I have always maintained that he’s wrong and it’s wonderful just how it is. But really…what is the point of this chapter? The giant plot never really pays off. On original read I thought it was setting up something big, but all that happens is that Grawp shows up later on and then kind of wrestles a giant? And that’s it? Don’t get me wrong, I would read a Harry Potter encyclopedia for fun, and I find this tale about the giants interesting. but it’s a Chekovk’s gun that never goes off!

Hagrid tells a story about giants, murder, and beatings that’s intriguing but really I have nothing to add to it until FUCKING UMBRIDGE shows up and talks to Hagrid like she’s one of those idiots who uses baby talk to speak to teenagers.

In the long, long, long line of horrendous things Umbridge does, treating Hagrid like he’s mentally challenged is one of the most disgusting, and turns me into this:

Hagrid tries to blame a broken tea mug and the talking Umbridge overheard on Fang which is HILARIOUS and also, if he was part of my family a probable explanation, as our favorite thing to do with our pets is give them funny voices and say snide jokes about us, their owners, and  oh no I’ve said too much!

The evil bigoted bitch finally leaves after giving veiled threats to Hagrid, and Hermione begs Hagrid to be careful when he’s teaching, as Umbridge will be out to get him. Hagrid blows her off and dammit, Hagrid! Listen to her!
