A Harry Potter Reread: The Order of the Phoenix Chapter 34

Chapter Thirty-Four: The Department of Mysteries

In chapter thirty-four of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix  Harry picks up mysterious glowing ball, Lucius Malfoy is summoned if you twirl three times in a mirror covered in hair bows, and Luna somehow doesn’t fall off her thestral.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

Our SuperSix are climbing onto the invisible death dragon horses and–Luna, what are you doing?!

Luna was already in place, sitting sidesaddle and adjusting her robes as though she did this every day.

Luna you are about to fly on a death horses mid air for a long time and you’re sitting SIDE SADDLE?! So they fly to London and somehow Luna doesn’t fall to her death because she’s sitting unsafely and then they’re inside the totally empty Ministry—

OK what has been done to Percy Weasley?! Are you trying to tell me Mr. Cauldron Bottoms himself is not camped out at all hours of the night at the Ministry, feverishly thinking of ways to boot-lick Fudge more effectively?!

Oddly no one is in the Ministry, not even Percy, and we never find out why. They descend to the only Department in the Ministry worth working in, the Department of Mysteries.

Of course the Ministry’s got the weirdest set up of all time for their department, with a spinning room of unmarked doors, a tank full of brains, a whispering veil, and a jar of time.

But the right room is full of blue mood lighting, jars of prophecies, and the stench of Harry’s potent regret.

You see, Sirius isn’t there, and instead of accepting the consequences of illegally breaking into Umbridge’s fire, siccing  a herd of centaurs on her, and assaulting their fellow classmates before sneaking off campus on flying death dragon skeletal horses, Harry’s desperately clinging to the chance that something awful is happening to justify it all.

It’s reckless, but I totally understand why Harry picks up the mysterious glowing ball with his name and the Dark Lord’s name on it, summoning a pasty man with a pimp cane who loves his hot oil treatments and facials.
