A Harry Potter Reread: The Half Blood Prince Chapter 3

Chapter Three: Will and Won’t

In chapter three of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Harry drools on some exposition, Dumbledore is kind of a hypocrite, and Kreacher’s redemption tour begins.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

It’s our third chapter in a row of fun exposition when we get some articles smooshed into sleeping HPotz’s face about current events, and my favorite part is the article where Grandma Longbottom has decided to skip past humble bragging and go directly to straight up bragging about her grandson’s exploits.

Dumbles shows up to the Dursley’s astonishment, and does his fave passive aggressive act pretending he’s super polite and all but he’s knocking glasses of alcohol on all the Dursley’s heads while he does it. Oh, Dumbledore. I hate the Dursley parents too, but you’re the asshole who left Harry there with no respite for ten years so let’s not act like you’re above it all. Also? you comment on the abusive parenting toward Dudley not five minutes later yet you’re tormenting him as well here. Sigh.

So Harry’s got some more plot holes to deal with, namely the inheritance of the Black House, Kreacher, and Buckbeak, and the most interesting part is that this is the first tiny step to a very well done redemption arc for Kreacher, who up to this point is an odious little backstabbing jerkface.

Dumbledore rightfully tears into the Dursley parents for being the worst aunt and uncle ever and honestly, my favorite part is the aforementioned surprise where he’s almost as mad that Vernon and Petunia have f’d up Dudley too. Not to get too personal, but I have a relative who was raised as a Harry in the same house as her sibling, the Dudley. And the Dudley I know got messed up far worse then the Harry. Vernon and Petunia of course are like

at Dumbledore’s accusation of Dudley abuse but we know better. Harry’s set free by Dumbledore, who gets off a classic Dumbledore Quote, which I maaaaybe have received on a cake before given to me by friends.
