A Harry Potter Reread: The Deathly Hallows Chapter 19

Chapter Nineteen: The Silver Doe

In chapter nineteen of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry channels me when I’m not in tropical warmth weather, Ron stabs an evil eye that’s not Sauron, and Hermione tries to choke Ron to death with her bare hands in her mind.

(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)

Harry’s my mood this chapter as he’s freezing even though he’s wearing every sweater he owns (me in weather below forty degrees fahrenheit) and then he follows a mysterious silvery patronus doe through the woods until he finds the sword of Gryffindor in an ice pond. Good thing this wasn’t a Voldy trap!

I rock back and forth and cry at the thought of being forced to submerge myself in ice water when anything below eighty fahrenheit hurts me and then Harry jumps in, almost strangling to death from his sentient creepy ass Horcrux locket that he’s still rocking as the best ice diving accessory.

No matter, Ron Weasley has shown up to save the day! Real talk, I’m not mad that Ron left the narrative, but why did he? What point did it serve? Why did the deluminator matter, and how on Earth did Dumbledore know that Ron would need it? *coughRonisDumbleldoretheory*  My guess? Ron runs out on HSquared because JKR was trying to show the despair of the situation, that even Harry’s friends were abandoning him. Otherwise it doesn’t seem to serve much purpose.

So Harry decides it’s Ron’s turn to kill a piece of Voldy and I do love that everyone gets a whack at him in this book and it’s not just Harry. The tiny soul is like “lol Ron your mom wanted a girl and obviously Hermione wants Harry” while JKR of recent years nods at the latter. I don’t want to rub salt but…*whispers* the part about Molly wanting Ron to be a girl is kind of obvious, yes? Six boys, and then you stop right after your first and only girl? Plus all the MAROON. Poor Ron. So Roonil Wazlib is like “take this pointy sword bitch” and kills the Horcrux sliver dead.

Ron’s all crying in the snow and shit about Hermione not liking him while Harry’s like er…Ron…you do know Hermione and I spent ages barely tolerating each other, right? We weren’t making with the naked monkey sex while you were gone?

Hermione almost pounds Ron into pulp but Harry’s used his thinkin’ brain for once

and kept her wand so she doesn’t turn Ron into a slug in the shape of ginger powder and Ron explains that he tried to come back straight away but got caught by a gang of snatchers. I’m going to skip all this exposition and raise an eyebrow once more about the weirdness of the deluminator. It is kind of sad that Dumbledore’s will bequeath to Ron was him being like “so more then anything, I know you’ll punk out and need to find Harry again, toodles I’m going to rest now” and then he’s RIGHT. Oh, Ron.

Well, the good news is, Hermione hasn’t sterilized you with something rusty yet!

What is the coldest water you’ve been in?

Did the Weasley’s have so many children because they wanted a girl?

Why does Dumbledore give Ron the deluminator/how does he know Ron will need it?

Why does Ron leave the story in the narrative/what purpose does this serve?
