DIY Harry Potter House Ball Ornaments

I absolutely love these ornaments from  the Wizarding World of Harry Potter that currently go for $21.95 each, but my wallet does not. So I created my own version! The fun part is that you can do this craft in bulk, and have many ornaments for your tree at a fraction of the price.

First, gather your materials. You will need:

  • Mod Podge ( I prefer the way the matte turned out, but you can also use glossy)
  • Ornaments I got entire boxes in all four colors half off from Michael’s
  • Ornament hooks or ribbon
  • Scissors
  • A color printer
  • Printed images of the house crests
  • Glitter glue in silver and gold

First, I cut out the size of the crests I wanted for my ornaments.

Through trial and error, I determined I enjoyed a medium sized crest.

Get a paint brush and some Mod Podge. As previously stated, I preferred the way the matte turned out more then the glossy.

Next, take some Mod Podge on your paint brush and apply gently to the back of the crest. Alternately, you can use a sticker of the house crest.

Place crest on ball.

Gently rub some Mod Podge on top of crest. Be careful not to get Mod Podge around the crest on the ornament ball. If you do, quickly wipe off with a wet paper towel or your finger.

Let Mod Podge dry until it is clear.

Take your glitter glue and ring your crest in silver or gold.

Add embellishments in glitter. Here is what Universal sells:

Full transparency…I tried to mimic these ornaments perfectly. Oh how I tried! And failed. Over and over. One, because my ornament balls were smaller. Two, my glitter glue needed to come out of a finer tip. So I gave up and made my own designs, pictured below.

Let your ornaments dry overnight, then hang on your tree with a hook or ribbon.

I loved how my Gryffindor ornament came out the best, because the glitter glue came out in a finer stream. If you can find glitter glue with a fine tip applicator I highly recommend buying it over a regular glitter glue. Make as many as you want, and enjoy!
