In my wrap-up post of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, let’s talk favorite and least favorite moments, and what we expect out of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
(Please be advised that this is a reread and I will be discussing book and movie spoilers.)
I promised in my last recap that I’d get to why Chamber of Secrets is my nostalgic fave of all the Harry Potter books, and for once I fulfill a vow!
My totally nonsensical reasons this book is the greatest:
Gilderoy Lockhart is a gloriously awful, hilariously narcissistic monster.
Tom Riddle is infinitely more interesting then Lord Voldemort.
Lucius Malfoy is a deliciously odious villain with insane accessories.
Dobby is a precious angel who keeps accidentally fucking up Harry’s life.
Oliver Wood’s mania fueled, continued deranged quest for the Quidditch cup.
Colin Creevey being the most entertaining stalker of all time.
“His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad”
The hotness of young Tom Riddle
Ron and Harry cosplay as Crabbe and Goyle.
But Chamber of Secrets isn’t all amusing weirdness and entertaining villains. Blood supremacy, hinted at in book 1 is brought to the ugly forefront in Chamber of Secrets, giving us one of our most important themes of bigotry and prejudice.
We also learn in this book that while he might get a standing ovation in the movie, book Hagrid gets Azkaban and absolutely no justice for the crime he doesn’t commit. Why isn’t Hagrid exonerated?! Dumbledore has always known that Hagrid is innocent!
But enough of that, because now we have an exploding evil aunt, a maybe evil godfather, and most importantly the ongoing, desperation soaked battle for Oliver Wood to win the Quidditch Cup.
